Port Moody, located about a 40-minute drive east of Vancouver and at the end of the Burrard Inlet, is home to over 30,000 residents. The population first began to quickly grow through the early 1880s as the Canadian Pacific Railway was finally completed. The first scheduled passenger transcontinental train arrived on July 4, 1886, a date which is still celebrated during Golden Spike Day.
Port Moody would become a major West Coast metropolis. Known for its small community feel and an impressive natural setting, is nestled at the edge of Eagle Mountain. The sheltered harbour still sees freighters coming and going, albeit at a slow enough pace that wildlife such as sea lions, eagles and osprey make the clear, inlet waters home. In addition, the city also invites the community of boaters, kayakers, and fishermen, while the forested parklands above are quintessential West Coast wilderness with hiking trails, lakes and mountain vistas. Port Moody is in the Tri-City region, one of Metro Vancouver’s fastest growing suburbs which comprise Port Moody, Coquitlam, and Port Coquitlam.
Since they also provide many big city services such as Coquitlam Mall, once of the largest malls in the province, as well as first class golfing and a laid back lifestyle, the city seems to lack absolutely nothing. The city is well-known for its rich, cultural heritage; first as a First Nations summer camp and then as part of the transcontinental railway which arrived in the late 1800s. Today, much of Port Moody’s heritage is simply a part of the lifestyle, filled with easy walking and cycling trails along crescent shaped shores and lush green parks surrounding friendly neighbourhoods and a cosmopolitan ambiance. Belcarra and Anmore are two of the three politically independent villages – the other is Lions Bay. Because of their comparative autonomy, land values have sky-rocketed in recent years.
