West Vancouver, incorporated early 1912 after separating from the District of North Vancouver, spans over 87 kilometres, and is a strong and proud community of 45,000. The city is home to one of Canada’s first shopping malls, and also to the Horseshoe Bay Ferry Terminal, one of the main connecting points between British Columbia mainland and Vancouver Island. In November 1938, and at the price tag topping six million dollars, the Lions’ Gate Bridge was opened to traffic (collecting toll up until the toll was lifted in 1963), allowing extensive growth of the semi-populated community, previously only accessible by ferry. Some homes in West Vancouver date back to the 1920s and 30s, though most of the currently existing dwellings were built-in the 1970s and 80s, and mostly in British Pacific Properties’ developments. The first West Vancouver high-rise apartment opened in 1961. During the real estate boom in 1909, property lots were sold for as little as $450.00 and sometimes for as much as $4,500.00.
Today, West Vancouver is mainly a residential district as many residents are retired, work at home, or take the short commute to downtown Vancouver. West Vancouver has several public recreation facilities including an 18-hole golf course, a pool, an ice rink, basketball and tennis courts, skateboard parks and numerous public parks. The majestic city is known for its parks which offer scenic views of Howe Sound and the Metro Vancouver area, the entire city is situated on the side of the Coast Mountains. Because of this position, most homes in West Vancouver, some very large and expensive, have views of Vancouver Island, the Lower Mainland and/or Howe Sound and often times finds itself referred to as one of the wealthiest municipalities in Canada. Over 80% of the population has a total family income of at least $100,000.00. A high percentage of West Vancouverites often times prefer to travel in luxurious modes of transportation perhaps contributing to the ever-growing limousine service providers vying for their business and their children’s business for graduations and birthdays.
