The City of Vancouver is named after George Vancouver, who explored the inner harbour of Burrard Inlet in 1792 and, as a result, gave various places in the area British names. The explorer and trader Simon Fraser and his entire crew were the first known people of European race to set foot on the site of the present-day city.  In 1808, they travelled from the east down the Fraser River, perhaps as far as Point Grey.

Vancouver, the eighth largest among Canadian cities, is a coastal seaport city on the mainland of British Columbia boasting over six hundred thousand local residents.  The City of Vancouver is one of the most ethnically and linguistically diverse cities in Canada, with 52% for whom English is not their first language. The original settlement, named Gastown, grew around the Hastings Mill logging sawmill and a nearby tavern, both established in 1867 and eventually was renamed “Vancouver” and incorporated as a city in 1886.
